Cows

“Butter”

“Peanut”

On August 19th (2009) Brian and I picked up our new bully boy – now named Peanut.  Peanut was busy munching his dinner and did not want to cooperate, refusing the halter and then shameing us with little interest in the trailor, and grass or grain incentives.  Finally, after he had dutifully schooled us as to who was ‘boss’ – he stepped in, pretty as you please, to munch on wheat bread set before him in the trailor.

He rode like a trooper, giving an orchestration of “Moooos” to the delight of some children at the gas station … and didn’t break a sweat on Granny’s bumpy driveway.

We opened the gate, chased curious little Butter as far back as she would go in her pasture, and opened the door to the trailor.  His nose was up, lips smacking and curled as he got her scent.  We were ready to herd him in, with every precaution that we could manage for the 50′ trek to the gate – but he sauntered right in, seeking the fresh hay bale out … and waiting new girlfriend, Who had snuck back as far as she had dared.  (Remember, she has not seen another cow since she was only days old – and thinks she is a goat, sheep or maybe even a llama!)

We watched from the sidelines for about half an hour – the two at opposite ends of the hay bale, munching away, and eyeing each other.  Then Butter took off, lickty-split, to hide behind an 8″ tree about 15 feet away.  SOOOO FUNNY!   One eye, barely visible … as if  THIS tree would conceal her… you could almost audibly hear her giggle!  Then after a moment, Peanut trotted quickly across the open area in the opposite direction, about 30 feet away, hid behind some 6′ sappling pines, turned, mooed, and began to play peek-a-boo with her, each taking turns at softly mooing at the other.  This was their game of choice off and on that evening, and for several days afterward.

They are almost inseparable now, often grooming each other – and yes, he is definately showing signs of breeding interest.  Yeah!!!!  He walks so PROUD now, and is gaining weight and a beautiful shine to his coat.  He DEFINATELY likes his girl….

So cute to see and hear their CHARGING across the pasture to see me when I call out :

Peanut       Butter        Come on babies!

He knows his name now, have tested that by calling him individually.  Poor little Butter comes slowly trudging behind, giving her soft mooo:  “What?  You don’t want me too????”  So, I don’t do that often.  I can’t stand to hurt her feelings!

We have decided (I know it is ridiculously early to even dream…) to name our little boy “Jelly”  or little girl “Honey”.

THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!  He is so lovely, and has a wonderful temperment!

I have sent you, via snail-mail, the necessary paperwork for his transfer to the AMR.  —- explained how sick you both were, and I didn’t want to impose on you guys any more than necessary when I picked Peanut up… and —- was already so taxed, just trying to get him haltered… What a terrible way to spend —-s much needed and anticipated vacation!

I hope you are both finally over the CRUD and back on track health and spirtual wise.  I think of you daily, and tell Peanut what a good Mommy he had, and how you were looking after his best interest sending him to me.  He seems to understand and is SOOO happy and content with me and his new home … and of course, Butter too.

Always, always,

 Kate
